Haile Gebre-Selassie, founder of the Great Ethiopian Run, has helped to launch South Sudan’s version of Great Run. At press conference in Addis Ababa, the renowned athlete said he hoped the event will promote peace for the war ravaged South Sudan and raise funds for the impending famine in the country.
The event, dubbed “Fund raising for famine and poverty fighting” is due to be held on April 8, 2017 in the capital Juba. The 10 km race is expected to draw around 5,000 participants, organizer said.
Owner of Dembesh Hotel in Juba and AFGAD construction, the Ethiopian national Ayisheshim Teka collaborated in finance and logistics. The program for the event has been approved by the South Sudan officials and media announcement will be made in Juba on Thursday.
This is not the first time that the Great Ethiopian Run participates in organizing an event outside of Ethiopia. Two years ago Great Ethiopian Run helped to organize the Millennium Marathon in Accra Ghana, September 5, 2015.
