Ethiopia’s tourism industry’s overall revenue falls below target, the government figures show. According to the latest figures from Culture and Tourism, 700 000 foreign visitors arrived in Ethiopia during the last nine months, generating $2.6 billion for the economy. The ministry said this represent only 88 percent of the stated goal. The country aims to triple its number of foreign visitors to more than 2.5 million by 2020, in its ultimate goal to make tourism a pillar of the economy. Yet this the target looks modest, in comparison to that of Egypt, where 9.3 million tourists visited in 2015.
In 2013, the government established the Ethiopian Tourism Organisation- mandated to boost tourism destination development and marketing, and enhance the benefits of tourism in a sustainable and competitive manner.
