The total number of Oromos displaced from the Somalia region since clashes broke out between ethnic Oromos and Somalis groups is now 55,000, according to the Oromia regional communication director, Addisu Arega.
The displaced people have taken refuge in makeshift camps in Harar, Chinkson, Miesso and Babile towns. Others sought shelter in the homes of friends and relatives, it was said.
In the past year more than 400,000 people have already fled Ethiopia’s Somali region following violence during a border dispute, according to the regional communication director. The influx of displaced people into the region further strained relief efforts and the region has appealed for humanitarian assistance. “Urgent action is needed in providing the displaced with relief and medical assistance,” Addisu said.
