Ethiopian music star Teddy Afro joined the global movement to fast-track the AIDS response, a movement championed by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The 38-year-old Teddy best known for his folk and reggae music said he was deeply honoured to have been asked to join the movement and is committed to working with UNAIDS to help essential HIV prevention and treatment approaches.
Fast-Track Strategy hosted by the UNAIDS involves front-loading investments in the AIDS response to reach an ambitious 90—90—90 treatment target by 2020, it was said. “Reaching this target would see 90% of people living with HIV knowing their HIV status, 90% of people who know their HIV-positive status accessing treatment and 90% of people on treatment having suppressed viral loads. Reaching the Fast-Track Targets will also reduce new HIV infections by 75% and realize the vision of zero discrimination. The Fast-Track Strategy will see resources concentrated in locations with the greatest need and among populations at higher risk of HIV,” the UNAIDS statement reads.
Speaking at Economic Commission for Africa compound to celebrate the World Aids Day yesterday, Teddy said two of his songs raise the issue of AIDS, and he promises to keep his commitment to help in an effort to break the AIDS epidemic.
Teddy was accompanied to the event by his model and actress wife, Amleset Muchie.
