Prof. Mesfin Woldemariam is “recovering well”

Prominent Ethiopian human rights activist and scholar, Professor Mesfin Woldemariam, hospitalized in India is recovering from pneumonia. The 87-year-old flew to India few days ago and was placed in intensive care in a Bangalore hospital.
Prof. Mesfin “is in good health and is “recovering well”, according to Elsa Wessena, a devoted companion and caregiver who travelled to India with him. An initial check-up was first performed on him in Addis Ababa before he was transported to India.
Prof. Mesfin, a founding member of the Ethiopian Human Rights Council (EHRC), and the Rainbow Ethiopia: Movement for Democracy and Social Justice, is as busy as in his young years, regularly writing articles on the political and human right condition of the country, bringing sheer stamina and rich experience to his duties. He was among the leaders of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) who were released in 2007 after having been in detention since the elections of 2005. It was in the chill of his damp prison cell that prof. Mesfin was said to have contracted pneumonia.
