Irish-Ethiopian actress Ruth Negga has been nominated in the Best Actress category at the 2017 Academy Awards.
Ruth’s nomination for her role in Loving was announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Loving was selected for Cannes last year where it received very positive reviews, particularly for its two leads – Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga. The film is directed by Jeff Nichols, whose credits include Mud and Midnight Special.Based on a true story, the drama is about the prejudice and racism an interracial couple face when they settle in a town in Virginia.
Ruth was born in Addis Ababa, to a white Irish nurse and a black Ethiopian doctor who’d met at Black Lion Hospital. When political violence broke out, four-year-old Ruth and her mother went to Ireland and waited for her father to join them, she told Vogue. That was not to happen and three years later, her father died in a car accident. She grew up in Ireland and moved to London in 2006.Her breakout role was in the film Breakfast on Pluto (2005) and has since built a successful career in both television and film. She is known for her small-screen work on BBC’s Criminal Justice, Misfits, as well as ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and AMC’s Preacher. She’s also taken notable film roles, most recently in Warcraft (2016).
