Fighting broke out between Eritrean and Ethiopian forces on June 12, according to several media reports. Intense fighting reportedly broke out at the weekend on the Tsorena front between Eritrea and Ethiopia border. The Eritrean Ministry of Information accused of the Ethiopian government starting the weekend’s battle, which was reported to have continued all day yesterday after erupting on Sunday morning. Ethiopia has not commented yet. Ethiopia’s Information Minister Getachew Reda, who is out of the country, was quoted by the BBC as saying that he was not aware of the fighting.
A number of skirmishes are reported to have taken place in border villages in recent months, with some Ethiopians allegedly abducted by Eritrean forces. The conflict between the two countries between 1998-2000 left some 100,000 people dead.
The former Ethiopian province of Eritrea declared itself independence 25 years ago, two years after winning a 30-year war of independence over Ethiopia.
